What Is Damp?

Damp occurs when excess moisture builds up within a property. This can happen for several reasons and, if left untreated, may lead to mould growth, damage to walls and furnishings, unpleasant smells, and potential health concerns.

Types of Damp

Condensation

Condensation is one of the most common causes of damp and mould in residential properties. It happens when warm air containing moisture comes into contact with cold surfaces such as windows, walls, ceilings, or tiles.

Common causes of condensation include:

  • Steam from cooking or bathing
  • Drying clothes indoors
  • Poor ventilation
  • Inadequate heating
  • Excess moisture within the property

Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp happens when water enters the property from outside due to structural or maintenance issues such as:

  • Roof leaks
  • Damaged guttering
  • Cracked brickwork
  • Faulty seals around windows or doors
  • Plumbing leaks

Rising Damp

Rising damp occurs when moisture from the ground travels upward through walls or floors. This type of damp may require specialist investigation and treatment.

What Is Mould?

Mould is a fungus that grows in damp conditions. It often appears as black, green, or dark patches on walls, ceilings, around windows, or behind furniture.

Mould can spread quickly if moisture problems are not addressed and may affect clothing, furniture, and personal belongings.

Health & Wellbeing

Damp and mould can have an impact on health, particularly for:

  • Children
  • Older adults
  • Individuals with asthma
  • People with respiratory conditions
  • Those with weakened immune systems

Potential health effects may include:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin irritation
  • Allergic reactions
  • Worsening asthma symptoms

If you are concerned about your health, speak to your support worker and you should seek advice from a healthcare professional.
